Painful

It is such a pain to see our own people chanting "Down with India" and "Long..." the second part doesn't matter at all!

Geelani declares that all Kashmiris are Pakistanis because they are united by Islam and demands freedom!

It is so very painful that they are willing to move away from a country that's slowly but steadily carving a niche for itself and making it economically more viable just on one count... religion. I think they also enjoy the freedom in this country to the extent that they can chant "Down with India"... I do not understand what good would be bestowed upon those people if their wish is to be granted!

I wonder what kind of sadist satisfaction few leaders get out of getting the people to fight with each other and die! I am boycotting news these days! It's way beyond the limits that I could tolerate.

Hope there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Isnt that understandable if their roots are not with India... technically they are under an alien government right? GOD only knows how the boundaries were drawn...

If people of Kashmir don't wish to stay with India, why should India force them?

India (Indian politics + Indian army) is responsible for what's happening in Kashmir. May be it's time to give up Kashmir.

As per the UN resolution of 1948 regarding Kashmir , i am copy-pasting the agreement duly signed by The government of India

"Government of India and the Government of Pakistan reaffirm their wish that the future status of the State of Jammu and Kashmir shall be determined in accordance with the will of the people and to that end, upon acceptance of the truce agreement, both Governments agree to enter into consultations with the Commission to determine fair and equitable conditions whereby such free expression will be assured"

Kashmir belongs to India,
at the same time the people of Kashmir have the right of their choice and that is how the agreement done during the formation of Indian union in 1947.

I do not look this issue as religious, because the government in Pakistan is not Islamic but it is democratic.
There is no history that two nations fused just for the sake of religion, on contrary we could see many uni-religious got divided.

This is a political issue and NOT a religious issue.

@ MC - Yes, I understand. But I was just wondering why wasn't this done during partition.

@ Venkat - I agree. But wouldn't that signal the start of many more freedom movements? At least 4 states including Tamil Nadu are in pipe line. Will this set a wrong example that through violence you can obtain freedom?

@ Rayees - I perfectly agree that this should be a political issue. I just QUOTED Geelani who said that Kashmir is united to Pakistan by Islam. I wish it was a mere political issue with out much violence and blood shed! Alas!

@ Rayees - Thanks for the info on the agreement. I was wondering what was decided in 1947. Thanks!!

As the political parties have to save their power and vote bank, I feel that no democratic nation like India would ever be able to make such a strong decision.

I worry if the present turmoil persists, more and more blood are tend to be shed :(, without any positive outcome/solution.

\\ Kashmir is united to Pakistan by Islam\\

On a serious note, though the people of Kashmir have the rights to decide about their affairs, I can't imagine the map of India without Kashmir. :(

Kashmir could have flourished with tourism if not for the tension there. I strongly feel any foreigner would feel safer to visit a Kashmir that is with India than with Pakistan.

The government should do something tangible that would mutually benefit the entire country and the Kashmiris. I haven't gone into the depths but considering the amount of money we spend on defence there, we could route that money to the Eastern India (Assam, etc) for development purposes as they are next in the pipeline!

Frankly, all kashmiri muslims who shout 'down with india' are free to push off. But Kashmir will never be relinquished, 'coz its ours. And we need to defend that.

Its sad that these guys, being a part of the Indian subcontinent, being Indians, are trying so hard to get off the land that was their home.

Sigh. Anyway, thanks for commenting on my blog by the way! Seems blogosphere isn't such a bad place to be in after all! :)

I don't know Prashanth...this Kashmir issue has been a thorn in our throat for a long time...i wish like everyone else that it ends at some point...i would also, like all others, not like to part with kashmir...but this stupid and unnecessary chaos should end....

may be a free poll should be conducted where people can express their stand...people who want to move to pakistan and people who want to stay with India....after that all the people who does not want India can move away with the appropriate compensation from Indian government....that's all...period...after that no issue about the identity of J&K, becoz it would be part of India...and no one should stake a claim on it!

I have grown seeing the Indian Map, reading news about Pakistan supported terrorism news and Captain's movies - so personally I have a feeling that only very few people there don't want to live with us. Let them Go! - may be with some compensation as ela says.

but I don't know whats there at the other end.

It will be good if the problem gets solved before it affects the next generation.

@ Rayees - I agree. A decision is not any where close to be seen!

@ Victorious - At least the other states do not have backing of another country! Phew!

@ Srividhya, Ela, Sunil - If only people wanted to move out, then this would have been a lesser problem. The problem is they want to move out along with Kashmir leaving Jammu with India. And even today they call it "India occupied Kashmir" in the same lines with "Pak occupied Kashmir" and "China occupied Kashmir". I wonder whts the state in "China" occupied part!

@ Prathees - If that's what you were thinking, take a look at number of people participating in agitations and number of people walking up to UN every single day.
